My great grandmother was given a book upon her eighth grade graduation. This 4 x 6 book, dated December 25, 1885 and covered in a wine colored velvet,  is full of writings from both her classmates and her school masters upon finishing eighth grade. Written in beautifully flowing handwriting, most classmates communicated lessons and guidance for how a young woman in 1885 could find contentment. This series, Notes to Mabel 1885, is my reaction to the experience my great grandmother may have had, to a life lived 130 years ago. Each is titled with excerpts of the classmate’s writings. Through the use of multiple photographic layers, I strive to create work that stirs one’s emotions whether it’s minimal or complex, work that draws you in and holds you, much like this book has done for me.
